Heard this story on the radio about a week ago and decided to check up on it.
Basically, anyone with a laptop computer can access the CCTV cameras that are scattered along the streets of Britain, allowing these people to 'catch' criminals, and be awarded 1,000 pounds for their services. It sounds like a swell idea but that would mean anything that you do on the streets, is being watched.
Imagine a pair of lecherous eyes stalking you wherever you walk through the streets of London, all in the name of 'surveillance'. I totally would not mind if this was governed by the law enforcement, but allowing the common man to watch anything and everything that happens on the streets is just going too far.
Anyone can become an armchair voyeur with this new system. It just brings to mind two questions:
1. What is the police force in Britain doing? Do they really have that much crime that such pathetic measures have to come to play so that they can do their jobs properly?
2. What ever happened to privacy? As though social media isn't bad enough, now we have eyes on the streets that is connected to the interwebs for all-easy access?
If this actually becomes successful, other countries will start adopting this and we will have everyone, watching everything.
Is this what the future holds?
Think about it.
